José Andrés receives the Gastronomika 2020 Tribute Award

“He’s one of us”. That’s how Benjamín Lana, president of the Vocento Gastronomy Division, introduced José Andrés before symbolically and virtually presenting him with the San Sebastian Gastronomika - Euskadi Basque Country 2020 Tribute Award, sponsored by Makro.

An award that has gone to the Asturian who lives in Washington on account of his humanitarian work and his permanent commitment to solidarity, encouraged this year by the fact that his organisation (World Central Kitchen) has come to Spain to provide help in the Covid-19 crisis.

Destacaba Lana stressed the award winner’s “ability to get others to do things”, a feature of his leadership that has enabled him to be able to reach every corner of the world with his World Central Kitchen organisation on whose behalf José Andrés insisted on picking up the award: “I accept this tribute on behalf of all the chefs at World Central Kitchen”. For José Andrés it has been clearly shown that chefs and cooks are committed people, “our profession has been where it was needed, alongside many other NGOs” and this capacity to unite people and our responsiveness is what, in his view, “makes us one big family”. Finally, he launched a call for united action: “Together we can put an end to hunger in the world”.
